Volunteer Stories
It is true that April showers bring May flowers, but the flora at the Ronald McDonald House near Children’s Memorial Hospital have received a lot of assistance over the last 25 years. Joe Hobein has been a fixture in the garden over this time, bringing his expertise and energy as the head “greens keeper."
Joe’s relationship with the House began after he retired and felt that he needed a “mental challenge,” although, as he admits, he “did not know a flower from a weed” at the time. Anyone who has walked past the beautiful peonies and roses in the summer can attest that he is a quick study. Joe extends his responsibilities beyond watering and planting, and is often seen interacting with guests; he is never too busy to share a gardening tip.
In addition to the helpful hints, these interactions reinforce the core mission of RMH: to make the guests more comfortable and, as Joe states it, “to take their minds off the issue at hand for a bit.” His dedication to the House is never more evident than during the summer, where he is present nearly every day working in the flower garden with the volunteers. His assistance, however, does not end with the garden: he helps with the pop tabs, fixes furniture or anything else that needs completing in the House.
Volunteering “is engrained in me and I feel that I can do a better job each year. It’s a challenge each year and hopefully it acts as a comfort to the families who stay here.” Families, volunteers, and neighbors constantly comment how beautiful the garden and yard are, and that is all thanks to Joe. “I’ve met a lot of nice people, whether it’s the volunteers, employees, or guests” over the last 25 years, and all those who have talked with Joe or just admired his wonderful work are much better because of it.
Jeff Obbard, a father who travled with his family from Singpaore, helps volunteer at the RMH Near Children's Memorial Hospital along with the head "greens keeper", Joe Hoebin.
